Mamata asks CM to return Singur land ot face dire consequences

Singur, Feb 17 (UNI) Sounding the last warning to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today asked him to 'return' the Singur land to farmers or face 'dire consequences'.

'' Return the land you have forcibly acquired from the farmers.

This is my last warning. If you do not, be prepared for extreme consequences and your government will be responsible for any unrest,'' she said while addressing a rally organised by Paschim Banga Krishi Jami Raksha Committee for giving thanks to the court that struck down imposition of prohibitory orders in Singur.

Setting foot for the first time in the area since 144 Cr P C was clamped in December last, Ms Banerjee also dared the chief minister to prove that the farmers had willingly given away their lands.

''I have proof that 40 per cent of the people of the area have not parted with their land. The chief minister must prove his claim that the plots had been given willingly or else he has to resign,'' she said.

Alleging that there was something fishy in the deal between the state government and the Tatas, Ms Banerjee also demanded that the Left government made public its agreement with Tata Motors for the proposed small car project .

''Let us know why no tender was floated for the project and on the basis of what the deal was struck. The government is trying to hush up its misdeeds on the plea of trade secrecy,'' she said .

A number of local farmers attended the meeting with the deeds of their plots in hand. They responded to the Trinamool leader's call to prove that the land still belonged to them by waving the deeds .

The meeting was held two days after the chief minister adressed a rally at Nalikul near here where he made the crowd respond in support of setting up industries in the state.
