Wild elephant kills two persons
Darjeeling, Feb 16 (UNI) A wild elephant trampled to death two persons, including a child, and destroyed ten houses at Gulma Tea Estate near here in the last two days.
Police said the elephant killed a 3-year-old child and then trampled another person under its feet. The injured was taken to the Sukna Health Centre where he was declared dead.
Mrs Sumita Ghatak, Divisional Forest Officer of Sukna told UNI that the elephant was desperately looking for food. When the local people chased it, the animal went on a rampage. She also said that the victims' families will get compensation of Rs 50,000 each. Last night the elephant entered the village again and destroyed two houses, claimed villagers. However, the forest department denied it.
