Wild elephant kills two
Darjeeling, Feb 16 (UNI) A wild elephant trampled to death two people, including a child, and destroyed ten houses at Gulma Tea Estate near here in the last two days.
Police said the elephant killed a 3-year-old child and injured another person who was taken to the Sukna Health Centre where he was declared dead.
Mrs Sumita Ghatak, Divisional Forest Officer of Sukna told UNI that the elephant was desperately looking for food. When the local people chased it, the animal went on a rampage.
The victims' families would get compensation of Rs 50,000 each she said.
Villagers claimed that last night the elephant entered the village again and destroyed two houses. However, the forest department denied it.
