Mercury rises in North West region

Chandigarh, Feb 16 (UNI) After a day's breather, the mercury rose in many parts in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh today.

The minimum temprature hovered above normal by three degrees at Srinagar and Safderjung (Delhi) and five degrees at Hisar but stayed one degree below normal in Punjab although cold climatic conditions abated from the state.

Several areas in the region experienced fog in the morning, which reduced the visibility to zero at Adampur and Ambala, and upto 300 metres at Palam (Delhi) and 800 metres at Hindon, Sirsa and Udhampur. The fog disappeared as the day advanced.

The night temperatures increased in Punjab and Haryana with Amritsar recording 6.2 degrees Celsius against 5.8 degrees registered yesterday while Ludhiana and Patiala showed 8.5 degrees each.

The mercury also showed upward movement in Haryana. The minimum temperature increased from 7.7 degrees to 8.7 degrees at Ambala, from 8.2 degrees to 9.5 degrees at Karnal and from 9.6 degrees to 12.6 degrees Celsius at Hisar.

Parts of Himachal Pradesh also recorded a rise in the minimum temperatures even as cold wave continued unabated in the state. The cold wave is likely to persist for another two days in the state, according to the Weather Office here.

Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 4.3 degrees and Sunderdnagar in Mandi district 3.5 degrees against 3.4 degrees and 2.8 degrees recorded at respective places yesterday.

Shimla, which was lashed by mild snowfall yesterday, recorded 0.2 degrees Celsius.

The entire tribal areas in the state reeled under cold wave conditions with Kalpa in Kinnaur district registering minus 4.7 degrees Celsius.

It was a warm day for the people of Chandigarh as the Sun shone clear and bright. However, the minimum temperature remained static at 8.0 degrees in the city.

The weather Office has predicted light to moderate rain or snow at few places in Himachal Pradesh and partly cloudy days with fog or mist occuring during night and morning in Punjab and Haryana in the next 24 hours.
