Mahashivratri celebrated across AP
Hyderabad, Feb 16 (UNI) Mahashivratri, marking the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva, was celebrated with religious fervour across Andhra Pradesh today.
Devouts, chanting ''Om Namah Shivaya'', thronged Shiva shrines in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad to offer special prayers on the occasion. Devotees also observed fasts and offered special poojas and 'abhishekams' to Shivalingams.
Reports of celebrations came in from all over the state, including the Sri Mallikarjunaswamy temple in Srisailam, Sri Kalahastheswara Swamy temple in Srikalahasthi, Rajarajeswara Swamy temple in Vemulavada and Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy temple in Vijayawada.
It is believed that Lord Shiva performed 'Tandav', the cosmic dance on the night of Mahashivratri and those who stay awake all night and chant the Lord's name would get a place in heaven.
