Kolkata, Feb 16 (UNI) Switching over his role as an ''obedient patient'' from a political patriarch for a brief period, CPI(M) veteran Jyoti Basu underwent root canal therapy to tame a delinquent molar tooth at a city hospital today.

Mr Basu, who was suffering from toothache for the past few days, was taken to a Government dental college and hospital immediately after the CPI(M) State Secretariat meeting to appear for the first of the three sittings required for the treatment.

''He is such an obedient and excellent patient. He kept open his mouth for 45 minutes for the root canal therapy for his upper molar wisdom tooth,'' Dr. Dibyendu Mazumder, acting Principal of the college said.

He said the former Chief Minister did not want an extraction of the ailing tooth and hence the doctors had to opt for root canal treatement to give him relief.

Mr.Basu had been advised to turn up for the next check up after a week, Dr. Banerjee said.
