SHO, constable suspended following custodial death

Jammu, Feb 14 (UNI) A Station House Officer (SHO) and a head constable were today suspended for allegedly torturing a local youth to death in police lockup in border district of Rajouri, official sources said.

Police said Shoukat Ali, arrested on charges of theft, was tortured to death in Rajouri police station yesterday. The police also said since there were no injury marks on his body he might have died of cardiac arrest.

However, Shoukat Ahmad and head constable Gain Chand have been suspended and an inquiry instituted into the incident.

''The police have taken immediate action. The SHO and the head constable have been suspended and a special team would conduct inquiry into the incident,'' IG D P Vaid said.
