Amsterdam, Feb 14: Dutch authorities tightened security around Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, the fourth biggest European hub, after a threatening letter was sent to there, police said today.

''We found a reason to take extra precautions at Schiphol airport,'' said a spokeswoman for the Dutch National Terrorism Task Force. ''We now have more surveillance in and around the airport.'' The spokeswoman did not provide any details on the contents of the letter, only that it contained a ''terrorism'' threat.

Last August, a US Northwest Airlines plane bound for India was turned back after flight crew became suspicious of the behaviour of about a dozen passengers. But it turned out to be a false alarm and the passengers were later released.
