Kathmandu, Feb 14 (UNI) The Supreme Court of Nepal today ordered the government to release former Home Minister Kamal Thapa.

A division bench comprising Justice Kapil Shrestha and Justice Gauri Dhakal issued the release order stating that there was no sufficient reason to keep Thapa in custody.

Earlier, he had been sent to preventive detention under the Peace and Security Act on the charges of fueling unrest in Terai region during the recent agitations organised by Madhesi people.

The former minister, who was arrested on January 29, was handed three-month detention warrant on January 31.

The former Home Minister, who was one of the key figures in the erstwhile royal government, was also accused of ordering brutal clampdown on 19-day pro-democracy agitations last April.
