Dirba record voter turnout at 90 pc in Punjab

Chandigarh, Feb 14: Dirba in Sangrur district recorded the highest voter turnout at 90 per cent in yesterdays Punjab assembly polls, a Election Commission report said here today.

In a high voter turnout, 71.97 per cent of the 1.65 crore electorate exercised their franchise in the elections to 115 of the 117 assembly seats in Punjab and the Amritsar Lok Sabha bypolls.

The Dirba constituency with a total of 1,29,422, voters, including 61240 women, saw a steady flow voters to the 120 polling stations since morning despite continuous downpour, the EC sources said.

An estimated 52 per cent of the 124775 electorate, the least in the state, came out to vote in Garhdiwala (Reserve) constituency in Hoshiarpur district.

The seven constituencies of Sangrur district together polled 82.43 per cent votes, the second highest among the 20 districts.

The highest voting was recorded in Mansa district of Malwa area where 85 per cent of 547613 electorate cast their vote. Sardulgarh assembly seat here recorded the second highest polling in the state with an 87 per cent voter turnout.

In Hoshiarpur district, the turnout was 61 per cent.

The other three seats also witnessed a high turnout with Budhlada recording 85 per cent and Mansa and Joga recording 84 per cent each.

Faridkot constituency and Rampura Phul in Bathinda also recorded 85 per cent voter turnout. The other seats where the turnout was above 80 per cent were Fatehgarh Churian, Adampur, Nabha, Dhuri, Malerkotla, Sherpur reserve, Sunam, Lehra Gaggha, Barnala, Gury Har Sahay, Zira, Gidderbaha, Maloth Reserve, Panjgrain Reserve and Nathana Rserve.

In Lambi, (Muktsar district) from where SAD chief ministerial contestant Mr Parkash Singh Badal was contesting, 76 per cent of the 125604 voters exercised their franchise.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's constituency of Patiala saw 69 per cent of 131571 electorate coming out to vote.
