Asom getting ready for post Games uncertainty

Guwahati, Feb 14 (UNI) Asom is bracing up for post Games uncertainty, as the ULFA kept their promise of maintaining peaceful conditions during the National Games.

With the Games ending on Sunday and the state administration glorious over its success, the intelligence and security agencies are keeping their fingers crossed.

Top level security force sources said they had information regarding ULFA's probable strike after the Games.

''This was more apparent after we received confession of an arrested ULFA cadre, stating that seven of her aids were hiding in and around the city,'' the sources said.

The state government is, however, determined to capitalise on the jubilant mood. The chief minister has ordered the Panchayat to press ahead with the necessary arrangement.

The intelligence sources informed that the ULFA might strike again. They stated that there was a big difference between two of their strike forces - Battalion 28 and Battalion 1. The former operates in upper Asom while the latter operates in lower Asom.

''The lower rung of the ULFA suspects that top rung had come to some sort of monetary understanding with the Government to withdraw the boycott call during the National games. Although there is no veracity but to keep the flock united the ULFA will restart attack,'' the sources said.

''We must admit that, in the last couple of years, the intelligence has been poor and we do not even have profiles of ULFA mid rung leaders,'' they said.

The sources, however, did not comment on reports emanating from New Delhi that ongoing visit of Union Home Ministry's team to Myanmar would open up doors towards a better understanding and peace, with Asom Government playing a more proactive role.

There are reports that peace process would be resumed between ULFA and the Asom Government.

However, Asom is determined to push forward the Panchayat election, as the general spirit of the people is high after the successful holding of the Games.
