Second phase of Manipur elections tomorrow

Imphal, Feb 13 (UNI) The second phase of elections in Manipur for the 29 Assembly constituencies in the Imphal East, West and Bishenpur districts will begin tomorrow.

About 7,38,679 people will be eligible to exercise their franchise in 827 polling stations to decide the fate of three former Chief Ministers.

A total of 181 polling stations have been declared as hyper-sensitive and 646 as sensitive booths, officials said.

Six women candidates of the total 155 contestants are in the fray for the second phase.

The Indian National Congress has 29 candidates, Bharatiya Janata Party (9), Communist Party of India (16), Communist Party of India (Marxist) one, National Congress Party (17), MPP (25), RJD (17), JD(U)-1, and the JD(S)-2.

In the first phase of elections on February 8 for the 19 Assembly segments at Thoubal, Ukhrul and Senapati districts, about 85 per cent voting was reported.

The third phase of elections will be held on February 23 for 12 Assembly segments of Jiribam sub-division, Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Chandel districts.

Massive security arrangements have been made for the elections.
