Fifth seed Yuliana Fedak shown door

Bangalore, Feb 13 (UNI) In a major upset, fifth seed Yuliana Fedak of Ukraine was shown the door by qualifier Yurika Sema of Japan 2-1, even as fourth seed Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia and seven seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand entered the second round of Sony Ericsson International WTA Tour here today.

Making her debut in the WTA tour, the Japan lass conceded the first set poorly (1-6) to 76th ranked Yuliana Fedak, only to bounce back and win the second and third set (6-3, 6-4) to win the match and enter the second round.

''I have been playing good for the last few days. In the first round of the qualifying matches, I got a bye. In the following games, I played well and entered the main draw. Winning this match against Yuliana Fedak makes me feel great,'' Yurika said in a post-match conference.

Last year runner-up Jelena had to struggle against Wild Card entrant Sophie Ferguson of Australia 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the next round, while Tamarine had a cake walk against qualifier and debutant Chin-Wei Chan of Chinese Taipei 6-3, 6-3.

In another match, qualifier Nudnida Luangnam of Thailand was ousted by Yulia Beygelzimer of Ukraine 6-2, 6-1. In an all-Ukrainian encounter, Olga Savchuk beat Mariya Koryttseva 6-4, 6-4. However, Olga suffered defeat in the doubles when she, partnering with Sunitha Rao of the United States, could not match the serves of Alberta Brianti of Italy and Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine. They lost in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
