Dawood aide arrested

Mumbai, Feb 13 (UNI) Abdul Qayyum Shaikh, a close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and 1993 bomb blasts proclaimed absconder, was arrested by city police at Panjrapol Junction, near Sion-Trombay road at Chembur in north-east Mumbai today. Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of the crime branch laid a trap near the hot spot hotel in the area and apprehended him when he came to meet his associate at 1500 hours.

Briefing mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhananjay Kamlakar said ''we are in constant touch with CBI after his arrest as he was wanted in the 1993 blasts case''.

He was also wanted in several cases registered in the city since the last 15 years. During interrogation, it was revealed that he had taken shelter in Gulf countries and was closely associated with notorious gangster Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and his brothers. He was wanted for offences like murder, attempt to murder and extortion in Metropolis with the help of his associates.

He is also wanted in MCOCA case of 1999 registered at Juhu Police Station. He had floated a gang known as 'Qayyum Gang' mainly involved in extortion, Kamlakar said.

Inquiry also revealed that he fled to Dubai in 1991 and was handling his nefarious activities from there.

Before leaving for Dubai, he was engaged in property business and owned a tailoring shop at Mahim.
