Nath gives away Wockhardt Medical Excellence Awards

New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath presented Wockhardt Medical Excellence Awards to five outstanding Indian doctors for their contribution to the pharma industry.

The five doctors who won the coveted awards were Dr Nadir Bharucha (neurology), Dr Vivek Jawali (cardiac surgery), Dr S Rajasekaran (orthopaedics), Prof A Ramachandran (endocrinology) and Dr Hasmukh Shroff (dermatology).

''These doctors are institutions by themselves in their specialities,'' Wockhardt Group Chairman Habil Khorakiwala said here at the award function late last night.

The awardees were handpicked by Harvard Medical International (HMI), the international arm of the US-based Harvard Medical School.

''I am thankful to the Harvard Medical School faculty for providing their expertise, knowledge and experience in selecting institution builders, and icons in medical profession,'' Mr Khorakiwala said.

The awards, instituted in the year 2003, are a joint vision of HMI and Wockhardt to catalyse excellence in clinical medicine in India.

It is a biannual event that seeks to identify and encourage the valuable contribution made by medical practitioners, whose accomplishments have helped make advances in medical research, prevention, diagnosis and care in select medical specialities in India.

Wockhardt currently runs a cluster of super speciality hospitals in Mumbai dedicated to cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and minimal access surgery. It also runs super speciality hospitals in Bangalore, Nagpur and Hyderabad and a super speciality kidney hospital in Kolkata.
