Major tragedy averted, two ultras arrsted, one surrender in J

Srinagar, Feb 12 (UNI) Security forces averted a major tragedy, arrested two militants of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba while Battalion Commander of a militant outfit surrendered in the Jammu and Kashmir overnight.

An official spokesman said police and security forces during a joint operation detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Qazigund in south Kashmir district of Anantnag today.

Panic gripped the downtown area of Srinagar today when unidentified gunmen opened fire near the house of an advocate in Khanyar, official sources said.

They said the gunmen fired near the main gate of Siraj Uddin's house at Babdemb in the downtown city. Two bullets hit the main gate, causing damage to it.

However, no one was injured in the incident, the sources said, adding, the gunmen later managed to escape before security forces and police reached the spot.

Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) and police in a joint operation busted two hideouts in the woods at Challian Tethiwal and Khakra Sumarl in the frontier district of Kupwara.

The arms and ammunition recovered from the hideouts included one Chinese pistol, two magzines, two hand grenades, one UBGL grenade, two detonators and safety fuse measuring 3.6 feet. However, no one was arrested.
