Customs collection till January rises 34.4 pc

New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) The Government has collected Rs 70,872 crore as customs duty for the period leading upto January 31, 2007 this fiscal, 34.4 per cent higher than the collections during the corresponding period previous year.

According to the Finance Ministry figures released today, customs duty collected in the month of January was Rs 6,920 crore.

Excise duty collections from April to January this fiscal were Rs 90,677 crore, six per cent up as compared to the figures for the same period last year. Excise collections in the month of January were to the tune of Rs 10,428 crore.

Service taxes collected during the fiscal up to the month of December, for which the figures were available, were Rs 25,662 crore, a rise of 64.6 per cent in comparison to that collected in the same period last year.
