New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) The first meeting of the governing board of the National Rainfed Authority (NRAA) highlighted the need for coordination in implementing various programmes in rainfed areas and to launch awareness campaigns in respect to water conservation, watershed management and water management.

''There is a need for synergy among different components such as agricultural production, eco-technologies, value addition and employment opportunities and also for a coordinated strategy by different ministries,'' Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said, during the meeting held here today.

The outcome of actions taken in the last two decades for development of rainfed regions is not reflected in the agricultural production, income and equity indicators mainly due to lack of desired level of coordination, Mr Pawar maintained.

The governing board also considered and discussed effective utilisation of the resources under NREGA in rainfed areas.

Besides, it also emphasised that the Planning Commission should take lead in organising a workshop on various watershed programmes of different central ministries and make a comprehensive presentation on programme implementation, their impact and the guidelines to a group comprising the NRAA governing board and other experts in the field.
