Preparation on for Manipur election

Imphal, Jan 11 (UNI) Hectic preparations are on for smooth conduct of the Manipur Assembly elections next month.

Official sources said Chief Electoral Officer R R Rashmi discussed the preparations and also met leaders of political parties yesterday.

The CEO also issued orders asking all ministers and MLAs to abide by the code of conduct and asked all candidates to restrict poll related expenditures within Rs 5 lakhs. The candidates had been asked not to use more than three vehicles.

The electoral roll preparations were completed. About 17,06,646 voters will exercise their franchise in 2053 polling stations, including 900 in five hill districts of Manipur.

The elections would be held in three phases. In the first phase on February 8 polling would be held in 714 polling stations, in the second phase on February 14 in 827 polling stations and on February 22 in 512 stations.

The highest number of voters is in Imphal West district with 3.18 lakhs and the minimum in Tamenglong with 75,457 voters. About 3000 EVM machines were kept ready for the elections and about three choppers will be used, officials said.
