Moderate quake hits Nicobar Islands

Port Blair, Feb 11 (UNI) A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Nicobar Islands today, spreading panic among the locals.

The Indian Meteorological department confirmed that the quake occurred at 1617 hrs.

The epicentre of the earthquake was near Nicobar Islands in Bay of Bengal, about 225 Km (140 miles) South to South-East of Misha Island of Nicobar Group of Islands, the Andaman Police Control Room said.

According to preliminary reports, the quake was felt only in Campbell Bay Island.

Police officials told UNI that no damage to life or property had been reported so far.
