Fog causes 80-vehicle pile-up in east China, 10 die
BEIJING, Feb 11 (Reuters) More than 80 vehicles crashed into each other in heavy fog in eastern China's Jiangxi Province, today, killing ten people, the Xinhua news agency said.
The accident caused a massive snarl-up involving thousands of vehicles on an expressway between the provincial capital of Nanchang and Zhangshu, another city in the province. The cause of the accident are being investigated.
More than 30 people have been killed in traffic accidents since February 3, the beginning of the peak travel season ahead of Chinese New Year on February 18.
China's 1.3 billion people are expected to collectively make 2.2 billion trips this New Year, overloading trains and buses in the rush to get home.
A record 155 million passengers will travel by train, up 4.3 percent from last year, during the 40-day travel peak, the National Development and Reform Commission said.
Rising wealth means 9.4 per cent more Chinese, or 19.3 million, will travel by air during the New Year holiday.
