UN Secy Gen appoints Special Representative in Nepal
United Nations, Feb 9 (UNI) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has decided to appoint Ian Martin (United Kingdom) as his Special Representative in Nepal and Head of the United Nations Political Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).
Mr Martin has been serving as the Secretary-General's Personal Representative in Nepal since August 2006 and Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal since May 2005.
He also undertook a troubleshooting assignment as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Timor-Leste, where he had previously served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the East Timor Popular Consultation in 1999, a UN press release said here.
Mr Martin has also served in peacekeeping or human rights missions in Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ethiopia/Eritrea.
He was Secretary-General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992.
