UN Sec Gen appoints Special Rep in Nepal
United Nations, Feb 9: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has decidedto appoint Ian Martin (United Kingdom) as his Special Representative inNepal and Head of the United Nations Political Mission in Nepal(UNMIN).
Mr Martin has been serving as the Secretary-General's PersonalRepresentative in Nepal since August 2006 and Representative of theHigh Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal since May 2005.
He also undertook a troubleshooting assignment as Special Envoy ofthe Secretary-General for Timor-Leste, where he had previously servedas Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the East TimorPopular Consultation in 1999, a UN press release said here.
Mr Martin has also served in peacekeeping or human rights missionsin Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ethiopia/Eritrea.
He was Secretary-General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992.
