CM launches Vallarpadam Connectivity Project at CPT

Kochi, Feb 9 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan today launched construction activities of connectivity projects of the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) for the Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) Project.

Addressing a gathering after the launch, Mr Achuthanandan said the government would provide all possible assistance for timely completion of the work. Around 50,000 people would get direct or indirect employment with the launch of the projects, he added. He said the prestigious project would give an impetus to the development process of the state.

Mr Achuthanandan said the government would take initiative to establish IT parks, providing employment to around 10,000 people.

He said the government had appointed a special officer for metro rail here and would take steps to make the project a reality soon.

Speaking at the function Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu said the Rs 802 crore connectivity work was launched two months ahead of schedule.

The Public Investment Board of India cleared the proposal for investment of Rs 525 crore for construction of the National Highway connectivity to Vallarpadam and Rs 245 crore for rail connectivity.

Mr Baalu said it was imperative to complete the connectivity work before the proposed commissioning in 2009.

The ICCT project would initiate unprecedented growth in related areas - transportation, warehousing, processing and industries.

The rail connectivity work from Edappally to Kochi and the road work from Kalamassery to Vallarpadam was also launched today.
