8 arrested with weapons in Barnala constituency

Sangrur, Feb 9 (UNI) With a view to ensuring a violence free poll and preventing intimidation of voters, the Punjab Police has nabbed a group of eight people with weapons in the Barnala constituency.

Confirming the arrests, senior police officials here today said they were arrested while they were travelling in a jeep last night.

A pistol along with five cartridges, six sharp-edged weapons and an iron rod was recovered from the jeep.

The arrested were identified as Harbans, Rajbir, Kikar Dass, Kesar, Kuldip, Surinderpal, Gurjant and Sohan Singh. One of their accomplices, identified as Karanjit Singh, a Municipal Councillor of Barnala, however, managed to escape.

They were all booked under sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and the Arms Act.

Police, however, did not disclose their party affiliations.
