Haldia, Feb 8 (UNI) Tension continued in Iswardaha Jalpai village in Haldia district today after District Intellegence Bureau Sub-Inspector Sidhu Chatterjee was whisked away by villagers yesterday.

A big contingent of police led by DIG Midnapur Range N Ramesh Babu entered the village during the day, in search of the body of the missing Sub-Inspector and found almost every house locked as most of the villagers had fled. A few villagers who remained were allegedly tortured in the name of interrogation on the whereabouts of the missing sub-inspector.

Meanwhile, the Haldia Coast Guard searched for the body in the Haldi river thoroughly but in vain. Some of the policemen were seen working throughout the day to restore the dug-up roads. Sixteen people have been detained so far for interrogation. A police camp has been setup.

Small shops inside the village were also found ransacked.
