New Fellowship To Draw Researchers

New Delhi, Feb 7 (UNI) The University Grants Commission has launched a Fellowship Scheme for MPhil and PhD scholars in Central Universities to promote research, officials say.

The Scheme is intended to provide financial assistance ''to a larger number'' of MPhil and PhD scholars in Central Universities who currently hold no fellowship, according to UGC statement.

The UGC Secretary has communicated the decision to all Central Universities Vice-Chancellors to award Re 3,000 and Re 5,000 monthly fellowships each to MPhil and PhD students respectively.

As contingency grants, scholars doing research in Science subjects will receive Rs 10,000 a year and those doing research in Humanities and Social Sciences, Rs 8,000 a year.

The Central Universities have been advised to go for full coverage of the Scheme and decide the actual number of fellowships and date of implementation of the scheme.

The Commission expects the decision to go a long way in attracting and retaining talented students in research.
