2 killed in police firing in Nepal

Kathmandu, Feb 7 (UNI) At least two protesters of the ethnic Madhesi group died today when the police opened fire at protesters demanding autonomy in South East Nepal.

The police opened fire when the protestors started attacking them with bows and arrows in Katahari area of Biratnagar, the Kantipur said.

Two persons identified as Talu Hasda and Nirmal Rajbanshi died of bullet wounds when protestors tried to enter the city area under curfew at Biratnagar.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said 27 people have been killed in the recent unrest in the Terai region.

A preliminary field report by the commission on the Terai unrest said 21 protestors were killed in the course of agitation, three were killed by the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha, two by unidentified people and one by the Maoists.

The commission further said the agitation in the Terai region was not peaceful as claimed by the protestors.

Speaking at the report release programme, Yagnya Prasad Adhikari, Deputy Director of the NHRC said the commission was continuing its monitoring work in coordination with other organisations.
