US favours 'inclusive' polls in Bangladesh

Washington, Feb 6: The Bush administration, which is in ''close contact'' with the caretaker government in Bangladesh, has urged it to make upcoming parliamentary elections in the country ''as inclusive as possible.''

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Under Secretary of State for political affairs Nicholas Burns himself made an appeal to this effect.

''Bangladeshis are going to have to work through all of these issues themselves. What we encourage is an electoral process that is free, fair and transparent, is as inclusive as possible for all responsible parties, so that when you do have a result it is a result that can be accepted by the Bangladeshi population as a whole,'' Mr McCormack said.
