SAD candidate from Beas seeks security

Chandigarh, Feb 5 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) candidate from Beas constituency of Punjab Vidhan Sabha has urged the Punjab and Haryana High Court to provide him and his family security cover in view of persisting threat to them from the Congress candidate Jasbir Singh Gill alias Dimpa, a sitting MLA.

He has also prayed to entrust the probe into the firing incident of January 29 this year in which one of his supporter had been killed by his opponents to the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI).

The petitioner, who is a former chairman of the Punjab Forest Development Corporation, has also prayed for directions to arrest Jasbir Singh Gill alias Dimpa, Harmanbir Singh Gill, a brother of Dimpa, who is posted as SP, traffic at Chandigarh and Harpinder Singh Rajan as they were ''squarely guilty'' of a brutal murder on January 29, an FIR about which was registered at police station, Beas.

This was necessary, the petitioner further observed, in order to prevent tampering with evidence and threatening witnesses.

He has also contended that senior Akali leader Gurdial Singh, the candidate from Bhikhiwind constituency of Amritsar district, was murdered along with six others in broad daylight in 2002 as he had contested against Gurchet Singh Bhullar, a former minister, after his security cover was withdrawn.

After the preliminary submission, Justice Satish Kumar Mittal today directed the Additional Director General of Police (Security) to look into the matter so far as providing of security was concerned and adjourned the hearing to February 20.
