Katni, MP, Feb 5 (UNI) Death was defeated yet again when an agricultural labourer's one-and-a-half-year-old son was rescued today from a 60-foot-deep borewell pit in this district just like five-year-old Prince at Kurukshetra district's Haldera village in July 2006.

Authorities initially gave the child Amit's age as higher.

A roughly 12-hour rescue effort by municipal officials, fire brigade personnel, locals and private-sector marble company officials led to success at 0330 hrs.

Rajendra Kushwaha's son fell into the sack-covered pit, in his uncle's farm near Dhoreshwar village 45 km from here, at 1630 hrs yesterday while playing with other kids and got stuck at a depth of 20 ft. A closed circuit camera was used to monitor the situation and oxygen supply was also arranged but not food and water.

''Machines were used to dig a roughly 25-ft-deep crater parallel to the pit. A perpendicular connecting tunnel (four ft) was subsequently created (in two hours). Amit is in healthy condition but has been kept in the district hospital's intensive care unit as a precautionary measure,'' said District Collector Anupam Rajan.

Mr Rajan, Additional Superintendent of Police Purushottam Sharma and other officials were at the spot besides a team of doctors.

The Jabalpur district administration had been requested to seek Army assistance from the immense cantonment there but the rescue was eventually accomplished without military assistance.

At the hospital, Amit was fed by his mother Phoolbai. He is the youngest of three children including an eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter.

Even Oscar Wilde's legendary short story 'The Happy Prince' might not have gained so much popularity over the decades as Haryana's Prince had received within 50 hours while he lay trapped in a submersible well as millions of Indians prayed for his rescue.

As officers and men of the 65 Engineers Regiment, backed by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the civil and police administration, brought Prince out to safety, Madhya Pradesh's denizens almost danced with joy in front of TV screens.

Firecrackers were burst and sweets distributed at Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Sagar, Barwani and other places.
