Bangalore, Feb 5 (UNI) Minor protests in Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts and in some parts of the city marked the announcement of the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on the contentious water sharing issue of the South India's major river.

Additional Director General of Police Shankar Bidri told UNI here that sporadic protests by small groups of people, who burnt tyres and stopped traffic along the State highway stretch between Bidadi and Mysore, were reported. Police intervened immediately to avoid any escalation of the situation.

Police arrested 15 farmers in Mandya district, the main area coming under Cauvery basin and hotbed of earlier agitations on the decades-long water row. Minor protests were reported in places like Nanjungud, Gundlupet, Chamarajanagar and Kollegal towns. However, the situation remained peaceful in the entire district, where an uneasy calm prevailed since last evening in anticipation of the verdict, and elsewhere.

In some parts of the city, shop keepers downed shutters and city buses went off the roads. However, traffic was normal in the remaining areas.

In a novel way of appealing to the people to remain calm, city Police Commissioner N Achyuta Rao sent out SMS messages to the people of the city to remain calm as the situation was entirely peaceful. He asked them not to pay heed to rumours.

Authorities ordered closure of schools and collges in Mandya district, while the famous Brindavan Gardens was closed for tourists since last evening. Bus services between Bangalore and Mysore were suspended, while more than 120 inter-state bus services to Tamil Nadu were suspended at border points like Hosur and Chamarajanagar.

People were seen alighting from the buses from either sides and crossing the border by foot to proceed further.
