Haryana sets up Women Nurseries

Chandigarh, Feb 5 (UNI) Women have been entrusted with the task of raising seedlings in the nurseries in Haryana by establishing ''Women Nurseries'' to make them economically empowered and financially independent.

A spokesman for the Forest Department Haryana said about 829 Self Help Groups, mostly of women, had been constituted in the state to bring empowerment of women socially and economically.

He said the department raised five crore seedlings every year and bulk of it is raised through these women nurseries managed by Self Help Groups.

The spokesman said that by way of income generation activities and through their own personal savings the Self Help Groups of Women have been successful in raising their income levels by micro-financing and inter loaning.

The SHGs have done inter loaning to the tune of Rs 1.04 crore, he said.

The SHGs were also involved in bringing about social and political awareness among villagers on issues like girl education, marriage without dowry, banning sale of liquor in the village, action against girl foeticide, helping poor widows, celebrating the birth of the girl child, organising literacy, health awareness and environment protection campaigns, he added.
