BJP begins 24-hr fast near Legislative Assembly

Puducherry, Feb 5: The functionaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the state unit president Visveswaran, today embarked on a 24-hour fast in front of the Legislative Assembly to press their demands.

Their demands included among other things, shifting of the Government Medical College which is under constuction from Kadirgamam to some rural areas, allowing the continuation of JIPMER under the direct control of the Centre, streamlining of the traffic here and provision of protected drinking water.

The fast will end at 0900 hrs tomorrow when party leader Ms Lalitha Kumaramangalam would address the agitators.

Meanwhile, the overhead water tank operators observed a fast in front of the local administration department demanding appointments on compassionate grounds, regularisation of service of those who had put in three years and introduction of three shifts among other things.
