Six injured in clash at Singur

Kolkata, Feb 4 (UNI) Six people, including two policemen, were injured during a clash when Singur flared up once again, witnessing major violence today.

Police lathicharged villagers, fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells when a violent mob threw bombs and pelted stones at them.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said altogether nine people, including local Trinamool Congress leader Becharam Manna and National Platform for Mass Organisation (NPMO) leader Anuradha Talwar, had been arrested.

The incident occurred when more than 100 villagers, led by Trinamool Congress and NPMO leaders, gathered at several points of Bajimelia and uprooted and set afire a few fencing polls around the acquired land for the proposed Tata Motor's small car plant.

A posse of police rushed to the spot.

The demonstrators hurled bombs and a few stones at police, prompting the latter to chase them away and use lathis.

As the villagers refused to relent and continued with the attack, police fired teargas shells and also rubber bullets.

Mr Kanojia said the situation was now under control, though according to local reports clashes were still on.
