Prohibitory orders clamped in Puttur town

Bangalore, Feb 4 (UNI) Prohibitory orders were clamped in Puttur town, in Mangalore District of Karnataka, due to a tense situation which prevailed when some members of the 'Rama Sena' attacked police personel after they were denied taking out a 'Shobha Yatra' last night.

Several police personel were injured in the assault and stone-throwing forcing the law enforcement authorities to shoot five teargas shells when baton charge proved to be futile.

According to reports, 'Rama Sena' members led by its president Pramod Mutalik, had made a provoking speech and the crowds, which had gathered around, insisted permission for the 'Shobha Yatra' which was refused.

Thirty people were arrested in connection with the violence.

Additional forces were despatched and the situation was stated to be tense but under control.
