Powerful car bomb explodes in Asom

Guwahati, Feb 4 (UNI) Suspected insurgents exploded a powerful car bomb right in front of the main police station here early this morning. However, none was injured.

Police said for the first time in the history of the North East the ultras had resorted to car bombing.

The bomb was hidden inside a car that went off at 0330 hrs, police added.

The vehicle was towed away by police from no parking zone yesterday, and as nobody turned up to claim it, police got it parked at the seized car parking area in Panbazar police station.

The explosion was so powerful that the car was completely ripped apart and window panes of some nearby buildings were smashed to smithereens, police stated.

Had the bomb exploded during the day time or in the evening, it would have caused hundreds of casualties, police said.

With barely four days to go for the National Games to be kicked-off the blast had put a big question mark on the security preparedness in the run-up to the mega sporting event.
