Tirupati, Feb 4 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Committee on Scheduled Tribes Welfare, Chairman A Govinda Naik today said due to the lack of ST representatives from Rayalaseema in the state the STs are still in backward position.

Speaking to mediapersons here, the three-member Committee led by Mr Naik, reviewing the STs welfare schemes in Rayalaseema, said the Committee felt it was necessary to allot 40 per cent funds from the total allocated state and Central budget for development of the plain land, and the remaining 60 per cent should be used in tribal agency areas.

The present capacity at girls ST hostels should also be increased besides upgrading the classes from tenth, he added.

In Rayalaseema, the social and economic status of STs was very low when compared to Telangana and other coastal areas in the state, he added.
