Rafah (Egypt), Feb 4: Egyptian police today found a cache of explosives on Egypt's border with the Palestinian territories, a security source said.

The cache, hidden in the sand, contained rocket-propelled grenades and hand grenades that appeared to be destined for smuggling into the Gaza Strip, said the source, who declined to be named.

No arrests were made, but police were searching the area where the cache was found, north of the Rafah crossing, for suspects or other weapons caches.

Egyptian police have located many weapons or explosives caches in Sinai in the past year, some of which police suspected of being bound for Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel says smuggling across the Egyptian border is one of the main ways arms and ammunition reach the Gaza Palestinians.

Militants regularly fired rockets across the Gaza Strip's border with Israel before a ceasefire on November 26 which ended a five-month-old Israeli military offensive in the territory.
