Delhi Bar debars advocate from practice on moral ground

New Delhi, Feb 4 (UNI) With a view to maintaining high standard in legal profession, the Bar Council of Delhi has inflicted exemplery punishment on a lawyer by debarring him from practice for abusing a fellow woman advocate in the court room and deserting his wife and two daughters.

The committee comprising senior advocate Sanjay Jain, advocates K K Sareen and Sunil Kumar Mittal pronounced that the licence of Gulshan Bajwa had been revoked and he would be barred from appearing in any case before a judge.

When Bajwa appealed before the Supreme Court against the order of Delhi High Court, which had handed him a three-months imprisonment, the Apex Court referred the matter to the bar Council of Delhi.

''The misconduct on the part of Bajwa was deliberate and socially unacceptable. He knowingly brought disrepute to the image of the profession by conducting himself in a manner unbecoming of an advocate,'' said the order.

The Bar constituted the committee to look into the matter.

On October 19, 2006, the High Court handed down three-month imprisonment to Bajwa, who had abused and cursed the Judges and a woman advocate for appearing for an opposite party on August 17, 2006.

A division bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar also imposed a fine of Rs 2000 on Bajwa after holding him guilty of the charges.

However, taking a lenient view, the Court released him on probation after he tendered unconditional apology.

Bajwa was arrested and released on bail on September 18.

During the investigation, it came to light that Bajwa had deserted his wife and two daughters.

When he was confronted, Bajwa claimed that he did not know them.

However, the Indian Air Force records showed that Bajwa was married to Kamaljeet on May 1, 1976 and he had two daughters.

Bajwa is a retired Air Force personnel.

He argued that the present case pertaining to his feud with another advocate had nothing to do with his personal life.
