20 candidates in AMC polls get single digit votes, 312 lose deposit

Akola, Feb 4 (UNI) The just-concluded election to the Akola Municipal Corportation (AMC) has shown some interesting results, with 20 of total 499 candidates in fray from 70 wards of the civic body securing single digit votes.

Among them was the Janata Dal Secular (JDS) official nominee Husna Afroz Khan from ward No 21 of the city, who secured only one vote ..... that of hers. As many as 312 candidates lost their deposits.

The election officials said 167 candidates got two digit votes, while 270 candidates could get three digit votes. Only 42 candidates got 4-digit votes, that is they had crossed over 1000 votes as per the polls data available.

Liquor baron and official Congress candidate Harish Alimchandani from ward No 40 won the election by the highest margin of 1900 votes over his BJP rival Advocate Mahendra Sahu. Mr Alimchandani secured 2,364 votes, while Mr Sahu could get 464 votes, the officials added.

On the contrary, the BRP-BMS official candidate Mohd Mustfa Mohd Yusuf from ward No 14 of the city won the election by lowest margin of only five votes against his NCP rival Mohd Fazlu Abdul Karim, who polled 834 votes. Mr Yusuf secured 839 votes.
