Security beefed up in Cauvery basin

Mandya, Feb 3 (UNI) Security has been beefed up in the Cauvery basin area of Karnataka to prevent any unsavoury incidents following the pronouncement of the final order of the tribunal of the Cauvery River Dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu scheduled to be due on Februaruy five.

Mandya District Superintendent of Police S Prakash, speaking to UNI here said as a precautionery measure the force of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), District Arms Reserve platoons and also a company of Rapid Action Focrce would be deployed in the district which was more sensitive as for as Cauvery Water Dispute was concerned.

Taking into consideration the impending final verdict on the Cauvery Waer Dispute Tribunal Karnataka Chief Minsiter H D Kumaraswamy had convened an all party meeting yesterday in which it was unanimously decided that all parties would cooperative with the government to maintain peace. It was also decided that such a meeting would be convened after the Award was announced to consider the implication of the verdict on the state.

The state Home Department has also requisitioned additional forces from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and depolyed at other sensitive places in Mysore, Bangalore Rural and Urban districts, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Tumkur districts.

The Cauvery Delta areas in Karnataka had witnessed widespread violence during 1991 when the Tribunal delivered its interim relief directing Karnataka to release 205 TMC of water on monthly basis.
