Shillong, Feb 3(UNI) The first state-level Steering Committee(SLSC) meeting for Shillong under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission(JNNURM) was held here yesterday.

The SLSC for Shillong, under the JNNURM, covering the sub-mission for Urban Infrastructure, Governance and sub-mission for Basic Services to the Urban Poor was constituted last year.

Chief Minister J D Rymbai was the Chairman of the committee.

The main objective of the Steering Committee was to identify, decide and prioritise the city's improvement projects for Shillong for inclusion in the JNNURM, to recommend projects to the Central sanctioning and monitoring committee for sanction, monitor implementation of projects under the Mission and to review the progress of urban reforms.

Shillong has been identified as one of the 63 cities in the country to be developed under the JNNURM. The funding pattern under the scheme is 90 per cent the Centre and 10 per cent state government, which was a special incentive for the North Eastern states.

The proposed estimate for development of Shillong city under the Mission was Rs 2268.52 crore. The nodal agency for the implementation was the Meghalaya Urban Development Agency (MUDA).

The meeting was attended, among others by Home Minister R G Lyngdoh, Urban Affairs Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Parliamentary Secretary Lambor Malngiang.
