Engg student held for robbery attempt

Kannur, Feb 3 (UNI) An engineering college student, who hatched a plan to loot local jewelleries to mobilise his tuition fee, has landed in police custody yesterday.

Yusuf Muhammed, hailing from Vadakara, a first semester student of the Santhi Charitable Trust Engineering College of Indira Nagar, Bangalore, was arrested yesterday by Thalassery police with weapons meant for robbery.

He took a rented car from Nadapuram and purchased gas cylinders, gas cutter, swords, pickaxe, laptop computer, gloves and iron rods for the operation. On a routine check-up at the New Mahe National Highway, Parimadom, police seized the articles and took the youth into custody.

According to police, his father is working abroad and had sent Rs three lakh for educational expenses but Yusuf spent all money and could not pay the fees. Then the College authorities suspended him.

After that he came to his native place. He expected to mobilise Rs five lakh through looting the jewelleries in Thalassery and Kannur and planned to deposit the cash at college.

Thalassery Sub Inspector K R Anil Kumar arrested Yusuf and produced him before the Thalassery Court.

Police said this was his first attempt of robbery.
