TN: DMK announces candidates list for repoll

Chennai, Feb 3: The ruling DMK today announced candidates for 59 wards in Chennai Corporation which would go to poll later this month.

Former Chennai Mayor M Subramanian was among the candidates renominated by the party. Mr Subramanian would seek re-election from ward 140 in Saidapet Assembly Constituency. Re-poll to 98 wards being conducted following a split verdict given by Madras High Court following a batch of petitions seeking re-election to Chennai Corporation on the ground that the October last elections were marred by violence.

In the split verdict while one Judge dismissed the petitions holding that the court cannot intervene in the matter, the other Judge ordered re-poll in 98 wards. After the judgement; DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi directed councillors of his party and his allies including Congress, PMK and DPI to resign their posts to pave way for fresh election.

After the resignation; the council of Chennai Corporation accepted the same and informed the State Election Commission about the vacancies.
