CPI seeks govt intervention to contain communal violence in UP
New Delhi, Feb 3 (UNI) Distressed over the incidents of communal violence in Gorakhpur in the east of Uttar Pradesh, the CPI today urged the Government to take immediate steps to bring the situation under control.
CPI leaders, A B Bardhan and D Raja, called on Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to impress upon her the urgent need for greater unity of secular forces to counter the saffron surge.
According to Mr D Raja, in their brief meeting with Sonia Gandhi, they apprised her of the worsening law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, the CPI leaders met Finance Minsiter P Chidambaram and expressed concern over the sky rocketing prices of essential commodities, manily flour, pulses and edible oils and urged the government to take immediate steps to curb the trend.
Mr Chidambaram briefed them on the measures already taken by the government to monitor and check the prices of essential commodities, including foodgrains and sugar.
