Shiv Sena retains power in Thane
Thane, Feb 2 (UNI) As per expectations, Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party in the Thane Municipal Corporation, winning 48 seats after the final results of the total 116 seats were declared today.
It indicated that the Sena, despite heavy odds and revolt in the party did not lose control over the corporation.
On the other hand, BJP which is a partner in power in the civic corporation, performed very poorly and on account of its mistakes went down by as many as nine seats thus making it difficult for the Sena to muster support from other factions for them to keep their hold over the corporation.
The NCP has not done much inroads and the Congress, which fought the elections on its own without a tie-up with the NCP has been benefitted in two seats.
The MNS, a fresh entrant in the politics of the civic elections, managed to get 3 seats while the Shiv Rajya party, an outfit of the old Jana Vikas Aghadi, could get only one seat in the form of its president Sudha Chavan.
The Samajwadi Party, which had a lone corporator last time, took its tally to five this time. The BSP has got two of its candidates elected.
It is necessary that the party which has to have a control over the corporation has to have a support of at least 59 corporators and as of now it is most likely that the Shiv-Sena BJP will manage it.
The last minute appeal made by the Sena supremo BalaSaheb Thackeray to the voters of Thane has worked wonders in the form of the victory of the Sena nominees.
BJP could manage just 5 seats.
The final results are as follows: SS-48, BJP-5, Cong-16, NCP-25, SP-5, SHIV RAJYA PARTY-1, MNNS-3, BSP-2 and Ind-11.
The party wise position in the last election was: SS-49, BJP-14, Cong-14, NCP-25, RPI-2, JD-1, SP-1, TJVA-3, MNNS-0, BSP-0, and Ind-7.
The losers in the election are Former Mayor Manohar Gadve, sitting corporators Raju Kale, Madhavi Naik, Veena Bhatia and others.
Among the winners are Mayor Rajan Vichare, NCP President and former Mayor Ashok Raul and a number of sitting corporators.
