London, Feb 2 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on February 3 since 1900: 1924 - Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United States, died.

1960 - British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan addressed the South African parliament and said: ''The wind of change is blowing through this continent...'' 1959 - Singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson) were killed in a plane crash in the United States.

1969 - The Palestine National Congress appointed Yasser Arafat head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

1981 - Gro Harlem Brundtland was elected Norway's first woman prime minister following the resignation of Odvar Nordli.

1994 - President Bill Clinton announced the lifting of the US trade embargo against Vietnam, marking a dramatic shift in relations chilled for decades by war and post-war hostility.

2002 - An internal inquiry report saying Enron Corp.

inflated its profits by nearly 1 billion dollar and top employees raked in millions of dollars ''they should never have received'' was released.

2003 - Legendary American rock producer Phil Spector, who revolutionised pop music with his recording technique known as ''Wall of Sound'', was arrested for murder.

2005 - German-born American evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr, called ''the Darwin of the 20th century'', died at the age of 100. Through travels in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Mayr showed that new species arise from isolated populations.

**2006 - Al Salam 98, a ferry with 1,414 passengers, sank in the Red Sea overnight on a trip from Saudi Arabia to Egypt. Only 387 people survived.
