New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) The BJP today emphasised the need for protecting the legitimate rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, saying it was essential for the unity of the island nation.

The BJP conveyed its concern about the Tamils in Sri Lanka to former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickeremasinghe who, heading a five-member delegation of Sri Lanka parliament, held wide ranging discussions with party leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, at Mr Vajpayee's residence.

"The unity and the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka can be maintained only by guaranteeing the legitimate rights of all the people of the country, including Tamilian population of Sri Lanka," the BJP leaders said.

The BJP expressed the hope for a negotiated peaceful settlement within the framework of political unity and territorial integrity of the country in a federal set-up.

Mr Wickeremasinghe briefed the BJP leaders about the current situation in Sri Lanka. Besides, he appreciated the positive moves made by the NDA regime in the developments that took place in Sri Lanka during that period, the party claimed.
