State Human Rights Commission to be strengthened: Azad

Jammu, Feb 1 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the State Human Rights Commission (JKSHRC) would be strengthened and made more effective.

Replying to a special discussion, regarding reported killing of a Kashmiri youth in a fake encounter, in the state Legislative Council , Mr Azad said all its recommendations with regard to upholding the human rights would be implemented.

The Chief Minister also reiterated his government's firm resolve to deal with iron hand those responsible for killings of innocents just getting promotions or rewards.

He said innocent killings for rewards or promotions are heinous crime and those responsible for it would be treated as murderers.

He said action taken against the main accused in the recent case clearly indicates government's sincere intention to book the culprits and take the case to a logical end.

Mr Azad said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and he himself have repeatedly announced government's will to protect human rights. Any incident of this kind puts both Central and the state governments' credibility at stake.

''We will book such culprits and bring them to law for the punishment they deserve,'' he added.

The Chief Minister has already announced a judicial probe for the alleged fake encounter.
